Northern Europe’s largest game event is back!

The municipal board in Skellefteå has now decided to support the non-profit association “Nordskens vänner” with an annual grant of 1.5 million to arrange Nordsken in Skellefteå in 2021-2023.

After being forced to cancel in 2020 due to covid-19, northern Scandinavia’s largest event for pop culture is now returning with full speed and major changes. The 10th event plans to move both in terms of date and location. The event will now be held during the Halloween weekend (autumn break for schools), autumn 2021, and will also move down to Skellefteå center.

Placing Nordsken in the center means that Nordsken can be arranged independently of sports activities at Skellefteå Kraft Arena – and at the same time can use the newly built Sara Kulturhus, something that the organizing group hopes can give a real boost to both the event and the city center and help even more people discover Nordsken.

– It feels fantastic to start this collaboration with Nordsken and to start off to showcase Skellefteå’s new culture house in the way it is intended to be used, whole house filled with culture and creativity.

Maria Ekberg Brännström, CEO of Sara Kulturhus.

The plans are for Nordsken to take over a number of the city’s central locations. In this way, the event can color large parts of the center with creativity and joy. This also opens up for in-depth collaboration with the city center’s restaurants, hotels and shops.

– We have received a great deal of trust from Skellefteå municipality and will do everything we can to ensure that Nordsken has as great impact as possible. It will be a real job to rework Nordsken to suit the culture house and the city center, so it’s nice that we can already start planning and recruiting.

Nils Lundgren, chairman of Nordskens vänner.

Nordsken will continue to have a strong focus on popular culture in games, film, literature and art with a focus on fantasy and fantastic worlds. To strengthen the value for the business community in general and the Arctic Game Lab in particular, the event is will also contain the game industry conferences “Arctic Game Conference” and “Fantastic Conference”, which attracts world artists and heavy international representatives from the gaming industry and the creative industries.

For those who are interested in getting involved, adding content, exhibiting or otherwise collaborating, there will be a digital information meeting on 13 January at 18.00 (follow this link for registration).

Nordsken has been arranged annually in Skellefteå since 2012 by the non-profit SVEROK association Nordsken’s friends and is usually held in May during Ascension Day. However, due to Covid-19, Nordsken 2020 was canceled. Nordsken 2019 had about 10,000 unique visitors and about 500 visitors to the conference.

Sara Kulturhus, one of the world’s tallest wooden buildings, opens on September 8, 2021 and will then be Skellefteå’s new meeting place for concerts, performances, meetings, exhibitions, events and congresses. Sara culture house is built for constant transformation with large, open spaces that inspire meetings between people in a welcoming environment.

Arctic Game Lab is an organization that works to strengthen the gaming industry in northern Sweden, which includes Umeå, Skellefteå, Piteå, Luleå and Boden municipalities. In this work, Nordsken together with the Arctic Game Conference is by far the foremost meeting place for the gaming industry in the north and attracts visitors and exhibitors from all over the world. Nordsken puts international focus on the region for a whole week and has been a strong contributing factor to a number of businesses, establishments and collaborations in the industry.

Fantastic Conference is a new conference for those in the film, television, literature, vfx and series industries who work with fantasy worlds and was intended to be arranged as early as 2020 with partners such as Wahlströms and Bonniers Förlag. The focus of the conference is to strengthen the creative industry in the Nordic region and, together with the Arctic Game Conference, to create a platform for cross-industry business.
